The Feast of St Mary Mackillop

Another celebration for Good Shepherd School in Week 3 was the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. St Mary MacKillop a vital part of Good Shepherd School, this is because she was the founder of the Josephites aka the Brown Joes. The Brown Joes travelled all over Australia and New Zealand helping the poor and those in need. They built schools and that is how we are all students at Good Shepherd School. We celebrated the Feast day by going to a Mass for St Mary of the Cross and also having fun with our buddy class Room 4 as we worked on a St Mary MacKillop Art project.

My R.E Triangle

In R.E we have been learning about baptism and the Holy Spirit. We made pyramids to symbolise the three gifts we were given to at baptism; faith, hope and love. 

 

Jesus Strand - Religious Education

During term 1 we have been learning about Jesus the Son of God. This is my cube on how Jesus showed us that God loved us all as his children. We are all blessed with three gifts of faith, hope and love. 

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

Today was Ash Wednesday. We went to church and sang some hymns, got the ashes on our foreheads, sung happy birthday to a little girl starting school on her birthday! We then went up and got a blessing.
We did make an attempt to keep our ashes on our foreheads, but that was a fail due to swimming and itching it off. We had a good day and hope everyone season of Lent and it is a time of preparation. My lenten promise is to give up chocolate and do more around the house.

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday

Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday. We all had a great day in room 6. The festivities started with the burning of the ashes on the turf. This was a new and exciting experience that not many of us had seen before.
Later on during Religious Education we learnt more about Shrove Tuesday and Lent. People used to get rid of all their luxury items such as flour, sugar, butter, eggs and milk by making pancakes. We were even able to enjoy some pancakes of our own. We all thought it was a great start to lent and we are looking forward to the lenten season as we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus. We are the season of Lent and it is a time of preparation. My lenten promise is to give up chocolate and help more around the house.

Charism

Did you know the reason Good Shepherd School named their syndicates Connolly and Sheridan? Connolly and Sheridan were the names of the first two sisters that worked at Good Shepherd School when it opened. That is just one of the fun facts we learnt this week when we explored the charism of our school. The charism of our school is the flavour of our school, it is what makes us Good Shepherd School. Over the week we looked at the history of the school and unpacked the visual Image of the Good Shepherd Cross with the values, scripture, feast days and the St Mary MacKillop sayings. We unpacked the values and why we have those values. In groups we identified what each value looked, sounded and felt like before making up definitions. Another new fact I learnt was The sisters of Saint Joseph were also known as the Josephites or their nickname the Brown Joeys as they always wore brown clothes.

Graduation Mass

Yesterday we had Graduation Mass. I was not graduating but me and the other year 5 students got leadership candles which was cool. We sung some lovely songs and a new one called Light a Candle in the Darkness. This was also Mrs Gleeson's last mass which was very sad. Frankie did a very good speech and it inspired me to treasure my memories of Good Shepherd. I really liked this mass and guess what, it will be MY graduation next year! I can't wait!

St Joan of Arc

In R.E we did research on a saint. I did mine on St Joan of Arc. She was fun to do because I learnt a lot of stuff that I didn't know about her, for example that her birthday was on May the 30th. St Joan of Arc's parents were Isabelle Romee and Jacques d'Arc. She is the patron saint of France and her French name is Jeanne d'Arc.  I had lots of fun learning about her and I hope you do too.

My Cross

This term we have been painting crosses. This is my cross above, my design represents echoing love. I chose these colours for two reasons: one, because I love how these colours go together and two, because they all represent things, eg. pink=love, care   yellow=happiness, freshness  blue= calmness, respect. I really enjoyed doing my cross along with everyone else in the class. We made them to put around the school and I think they are all going to look really good.

Dramatization of Abraham and Sarah

Today we did a dramatization of Abraham and Sarah. I was Sarah, and my friend Molly was my thoughts and voice. This picture is at the end when Abraham and Sarah have a child called Issac. My friend Jemima was Issac as you can see in the picture. It was very fun to do this and I would gladly do it again.

For Saint Mary Mackillop's feast day we did lots of fun activities and an acrostic poem was one of them. I really liked doing this it got me thinking on what words to use.

St Mary Mackillop

Today was St Mary Mackillop's feast day and we celebrated it by going to mass and doing fun activities and art. Some of the activities we did were word searches and acrostic poems about Mary Mackillop. We also did dot art.  First we got a picture of Mary Mackillop and cut it out and glued it in. Then we chose our colours, I chose blue, pink and yellow. Then we got cotton buds and dipped them in the paint started dotting. I really enjoyed doing this because it was interesting and soothing. Today was very fun.
